For this assignment, I watched multiple interviews with a variety of artists. I watched interviews primarily with Aki Sasamoto, Brian Jungen, and Rashid Johnson. The interviews with Aki Sasamoto were fascinating in that her works of art are dynamic and interactive, and are based on her life experiences. She lives and works in New York, and creates a lot of works discussing drinking and the bar culture that exists in her life and around her. Rashid Johnson’s works are similar, in that he also explores life and art in New York City. He uses many different materials and styles within his galleries, so it was very cool to see two contrasting New York artists who go about their style in very different ways, yet can still explore concepts of living in New York City. Finally, in watching videos with Brian Jungen, I was able to see a very different side of art. Brian is from Canada and works in printmaking for a variety of concepts. He explores a lot of concepts using newspaper clippings of meaningful stories, combined with ink and other materials.
