Art 21 Assignment

For this assignment, I watched videos on Theaster Gates, Daniel Gordon and his wife Ruby Sky Stiler, and performance artist Liz Magic Laser. I began with Gates because I have seen several of his works in person in particular, his work that features a collection of albums that was recently shown during the Social Works show at Gagosian. It was interesting to hear about his reasoning behind collecting and archives “black space” and reinterpreting collections as sculptural works. Yet, listening to Gordon and Stiler discuss their emotions towards their older work stuck with me the most. Gordon discussed sculptural pentimento and how he “adds noise” to his works by leaving glue and pencil marks that show the process of creating. Then the artists went on to discuss how the further they get from a piece they’ve created in the past, the more they dislike it. In parallel, they mention how the more work you create, the more work there is to create. That phrase stuck with me in particular because I also feel that when I am consistent with creating, there are more fresh ideas to create next.
