1. Choose, consider, and clarify your topic
An idea that is important to me is exploration. This can be a vague term that I think is important to every aspect of my life. For example, exploration can involve the pursuit of knowledge; I intend to explore various areas of academia and be open to new ideas. Whether it be wandering through a park or trying a new restaurant, the idea of exploration can apply in all areas of life. I try to keep an open mind and seek out new activities, hobbies and relationships. I think that exploration is a vital to my own happiness because upon reflection, it is through exploratory acts that I have found my best friends and had my greatest experiences. I want my shrine to represent exploration as something that can be uncomfortable and may result in failure. On the other hand, exploration may result in great joy. However, in all cases, exploration will constitute a learning experience. These aspects may be physically included in my sculpture by creating various paths, with different end points, but that all are connected. My audience for this piece could be anyone, including myself. I think the message is important for younger people to take advantage of their lives and explore every avenue life has to offer; likewise this idea is equally important for older people who may need to be reminded of the possibilities we can find through exploration.
