Art21 Contemporary Sculpture Assignment #2
After watching an hour of interviews with a variety of artists, there were some big themes and points that stood out to me. The main artists that I watched this time around were Pedro Reyes, Mika Rottenberg, and Robert Ryman. All three of these artists have a unique way of approaching sculpture, but utilizing unique ways of portraying the work. Reyes focuses his work on stone and metal sculpting, while Rottenberg focuses on using video and installation to get a message across. Seeing the direct difference between these static and dynamic sculpture works was very cool, and again showed me how wide the field of sculpture is. Finally, Ryman focused on the intersection of painting and sculpture, again another take on how visual art can be portrayed in 3D space. These interviews and artists have encouraged me to focus on using different materials and to examine the intersections between materials for my final sculpture project.

I intend to somehow use the infinity symbol within my work, possibly in a three-dimensional aspect like this massive work by Gordon Huether.
Project 3: Parts 1/2 – Alec Freytag
For this project, I want to explore the concept of infinity. This is a concept that has come up many times throughout my math and physics classes and used to be something that I just viewed as a number. But as I have explored further and begun to understand more of what infinity represents, I have been fascinated that there are arguments about what infinity actually represents, and whether a true infinity actually exists. Even Aristotle said, “Every infinity is potential”. I believe this would be a very cool topic to explore because of the wide range of things in everyday life that we use infinity to describe. I think there are also a lot of different forms and shapes I could include to represent various occurrences of infinity. Infinity comes into play with things like:
1) Black holes, 2) Numbers, 3) Fractals, 4) Two mirrors facing each other, 5) Time, 6) Space, 7) John Wallis (Invented the symbol for infinity that we see today), 8) Pi, 9) Dividing by 0, 10) Singularities
Art21 Contemporary Sculpture Assignment
For this assignment, I watched multiple interviews with a variety of artists. I watched interviews primarily with Aki Sasamoto, Brian Jungen, and Rashid Johnson. The interviews with Aki Sasamoto were fascinating in that her works of art are dynamic and interactive, and are based on her life experiences. She lives and works in New York, and creates a lot of works discussing drinking and the bar culture that exists in her life and around her. Rashid Johnson’s works are similar, in that he also explores life and art in New York City. He uses many different materials and styles within his galleries, so it was very cool to see two contrasting New York artists who go about their style in very different ways, yet can still explore concepts of living in New York City. Finally, in watching videos with Brian Jungen, I was able to see a very different side of art. Brian is from Canada and works in printmaking for a variety of concepts. He explores a lot of concepts using newspaper clippings of meaningful stories, combined with ink and other materials.
