Angela Meckley Art21 #2
For this assignment the first artist I researched was Doris Salcedo. Salcedo centers her work around worldwide political violence. To do this, she chooses to connect the thoughts/experiences of philosophers and victims of political power to objects. She finds objects that she can connect thoughts of violence to, for example a lot of her intervention to the objects is minimal, but through choosing objects that seem cast out or less eye catching she brings them new justice as pieces of art. She especially tries to surround herself with the struggles of the victims of violence through the artwork.
The second artist I researched was Maya Lin. Lin is a female architect who won the contest for designing a memorial for the Vietnam war. As a female artist/architect this was an extreme honor for her. It is inspiring to me as a female artist to see Lin succeed with this achievement. She makes it a very big deal to “never give up”, and always strive to succeed with your dreams.
The third artist I researched was Leonardo Drew. Drew believes in living within the same place that he makes his artwork. This makes it easy for him to attend to his artistic callings right when inspiration strikes him. I feel that as an artist this is important because when inspiration strikes it can be very important to act on that as soon as possible so you don’t lose your idea/momentum for your project. The process of his art is surrounded by natural materials that have been burned, decayed, or oxidized. His process is done by transforming objects into large sculptures, which is very intriguing to me.

For my third sculpture, I would like to borrow a strategy from Anthony Howe’s kinetic sculptures. I like the movement of his sculptures, and I would like to incorporate movement into my sculpture as well.

- Topic
- The ocean/animals
- Discovering the unknown
- Animals in art
- Imagination/dreams/fantasy
- Natural disasters (storms/sun/stars/conflict)
- Metamorphosis (change/life cycles)
- Consider and clarify your topic
For this project I am interested in a few different topics (natural disasters, metamorphosis or change, ocean animals, the unknown, and imagination). All of these have been areas of interest for me, and I think I could somehow bring them all together into a collective sculpture or idea. I have always felt a deep connection with animals and nature. The ocean is a place of total unknown. We have only discovered a small percentage of the ocean and the things that live in it. Its intriguing to me to think about what is in there and what kind of change happens there. Change is something that I find interesting and challenging because everyone deals with change, and without it there is not growth. Going along with that, the unknown is linked because there is a lot of unknown things that happen during any sort of change or circumstance. There are a lot of things in life that are uncertain and are a result of change, which is not always positive or negative. Things like natural disasters etc. could be a good thing, but because of the unknown they are often though of negatively. With all of these ideas I have a point of departure for my sculpture that relates to something though provoking about the unknown.

Angela Meckley, Art21 Contemporary Artist Assignment
For this assignment, I watched several contemporary artist interviews but the ones that stood out to me the most were Mika Rottenberg, and Cai Guo-Qiang. Mika Rottenberg is a video artist/sculptor who uses films to portray issues/ideas. I watched an interesting interview of Rottenberg talking about one of her films titled Cosmic Generator. This work presents the idea behind the food market especially on the U.S-Mexico border. The interview begins with a clip of her film, but then leads into Rottenberg explaining/talking about the work. The films are intriguing as they focus mainly on the Chinese food market. By focusing on an object as simple as food, Rottenberg explores how some objects (food) can circle the world, but other objects (people, animals, etc.) cannot. I think the ideas she presents connect with distance and time for travel, and how that can vary drastically between items across the world. In this work she emphasizes the use of tunnels that are built sculpturally. The tunnels make reference to the border of Mexico. She designs these tunnels so that people can fit through them during the films, and it makes me wonder what her process was when sculpting them. In the interview Rottenberg talks about how this work is not supposed to be political, but I find that I can see it from a political standpoint as well.
Cai Guo-Qiang is a unique artist who makes art out of explosives as well as other media. He reflects a lot of his Chinese heritage into his artwork, while also making it relevant to where he lives now, New York. I thought it was amazing that Guo-Qiang designed a firework display for the Beijing Olympics. I had never thought of firework as an artform/sculptural art form before viewing his work. One idea behind his work that I think is interesting is the way in which he reflects on humanity. Humans have caused a lot of violence, such as explosion events, which Guo-Qiang accurately portrays. Since he currently lives in New York, he sees himself right in the center of a lot of political/violent human acts, which informs his work. I enjoy the fact that although some of his works showcase negative human impacts, he does it with grace and dignity. The works are informative but also beautiful and can allow healing for those who view them.

Angela Meckley Project 2 Parts 1 & 3
Part 1:
For my sculpture/shrine I would like to focus on the specific locations of Venice, Florence, and Rome, Italy. When I was in high school, I went to Europe to study Italian Renaissance art and culture. Many of my interests as an artist have been inspired by these locations in Italy. While I was in Italy, I got to see famous iconic works of art such as Michelangelo’s David and Sistine Chapel, as well as Raphael’s The School of Athens and many more well-known works/locations. Aside from the artwork, I got to appreciate the atmosphere and culture of Italy, so I would like to include some representation of what I did/ate while I was there. I would like to somehow focus on specific landmarks, famous artwork, and Italian culture within my sculpture. To achieve this, I will be looking to include some representation of what I saw while I was in Italy by including small replicas of them or things that remind me of them. I also think it would be interesting to include my emotions that I had while I was on this trip through a specific color scheme that also reflects typical colors seen throughout Italian culture/artwork. The shrine will most likely turn out to be a shrine to myself about my trip to Europe to study art, because it was a monumental experience for me.
Part 3:
I would like to borrow from Michaelangelo’s aesthetically pleasing qualities displayed in his sculptures such as balance, ideal form, and harmony.
