Within the contemporary artist videos I watched, I got to experience different techniques in which people go about their art. One person that I found interesting in particular was Ann Hamilton. She likes to take things that usually aren’t contemporary art material and turn them into them. She uses the written word and creates pieces. One piece was turning a 2D book page into a ball of “yarn” by taking the lines of words and entwining them into a ball. She wants to turn what’s visible into objects that people actually see which I found interesting. Another artist that caught my attention the most when I was watching was Mark Dion. One of his main goals is to go out in nature and find things and bring them back into their element. One piece was a giant tree that fell and he brought it into the center of the city where it originally would have been and began to make a garden of it for everyone to enjoy. I found this interesting because he puts a life long commitment into projects like these because they have to constantly be kept up with to stay alive rather than once a project is finished forgetting about it and moving onto something else.
Write about the main idea:
The main thing that I profoundly want to avoid in my future is a broken home/family. This is important to me because of how I grew up. I grew up in a household where everyone was close, my parents, brother and I were always together. There was never a distance between any of us. On top of being close to everyone that lives in my household, I also grew up all around my cousins, uncles and aunts. We are a very close family that gets together all the time. It is important to me for things to stay this way and to avoid a broken family in the future because some of my cousins are now living in different states and my brother is in the Marines and will be stationed in different areas. I want to keep the closeness alive even if we are apart and I don’t want to lose that connection and drift apart. Some obstacles that I am aware of is where I will be living in the future after I graduate. I want to be back in Pittsburgh, where most of my family is, but I know that there is no guarantee. the main aspect of this desire that I want to highlight in my design is the brokenness. I could represent this by creating my pieces and cracking it down the middle and setting them apart from one another.
ten words that sum up my want to avoid are:
Visual Research:
Part 1: Writing Assignment
The object that I chose to work with is a cat, which is a fluffy and lazy animal. I believe cats symbolize cunning, grace and independence. Cats remind of Egyptian culture and how people worship the sphinx as a powerful ruler watching over them and protecting them. Overall I want my project to relate to the fact that cats are independent creatures. I want to explore the idea of cats being rulers and watching over others. One of my ideas is having a bunch of cats gathered around with one cat ruler watching over them being their leader. I want to refrain from cats being rulers of people, but rather being rulers of the same species.
Part 3: Sketches
Alice Aycock, On the Interaction of Particles of Thought
Immediate Response:
My first interpretation of Alice Aycock’s On the Interaction of Particles of Thought, is the attractive feature of the bright blue color of all the small spheres. Contrary to the typical correlation of linking the color blue to sadness, I see happiness and life when I see the color. The blue spheres in this piece of work make me think of memories that we hold within our brain that are floating around waiting for us to recall them at any given moment. It is almost as if they are circling around in sections to always provide a new memory to appear.
Objective Description:
This piece of work is found within what seems to be a library. It hangs from the ceiling by wires in order to make it appear as if it is floating. There are giant metal rings that interlock and overlap with one another. Each of these rings holds a random amount of bright blue spheres that vary in size from one another. Underneath the rings there seems to flow strands of metal that almost resemble paper flowing through the air. The “paper” like ribbons almost graze the blue spheres that are attached to the rings.
Technical Decisions:
Alice Aycock decided to manufacture this piece out of aluminum, polycarbonate plastic globes and fluorescent light. Her choice of using polycarbonate and fluorescent lights makes the viewer think of opening their mind and think about new ideas. Since the piece is hanging from a ceiling within a library, it makes the viewer lookup. Forcing the viewer to look up to see the piece can cause them to look for new ideas within their brain and to think differently. The way in which an artist presents and constructs their piece adds emphasis to what they are trying to portray and Alice Aycock used just the right material and presentation to open the viewers mind.
The Work in the World:
In almost every piece of artwork, one can pick out an object that relates to something else they have seen or have learned about. The blue globes within this piece present a similarity to atoms found within a body. Atoms are one of the main components that make up the human body, which makes me understand that these spheres are the main component that make up human thought and this piece of work. They work and move together to make something unique just like atoms do in every living thing.
The Story it Tells:
Some people may look at this piece of artwork and just see spheres that are randomly placed in order to bring a little bit of a whimsical nature to a typically serious environment. However, the way I see this work is different components of our brain and thoughts working together to forge new ideas. The blue spheres represent different ideas that occur and circulate throughout our heads, while the “paper” is the means of which we write these ideas down. Our brains are constantly thinking and creating and that is exactly what I believe this piece of work represents.
