The object I choose to work with for this project is a skull with various symbols etched into it. Many of the symbols relate to religion, with a cross on the back and other Celtic symbols on the front. Personally, I think that skulls represent death and rebirth but in a celebratory way. Many people think skulls represent darkness which can be true in some cases but to me they symbolize the celebration of moving on to something or somewhere new. A skull is mostly used to denote death or danger. Many warning labels for dangerous chemicals use skulls to show that their contents can cause harm. Some cultures use skulls to celebrate their dead or to represent good health and new beginnings. Keeping this in mind, I want my project to follow the idea of embracing something new. I think that by using different materials I can show that to become something new, you must change both physically and mentally. I plan to do this by altering the skulls after I cast them and cause damage to some or build upon them.

I chose to work with an old perfume bottle. It was the first perfume I bought for myself. By definition, a perfume bottle is a vessel made to hold scent. I think it represents something romantic and positive and is usually one of the top gift options. It’s probably because perfume is associated with romantic relationships and strong affection. Plus, smells trigger strong memories. A specific perfume scent may remind you of a special memory or a particular period of time. From the appearance, a perfume bottle is usually made out of glass, which allows us to see the liquid inside, and creating a luxurious feeling.
I would like to create a project that relates scent to memory. I want to make the a series of replicas also transparent like glass, and adding memory elements inside the bottles, like snow globes. By doing so, I hope to convey to the audience about “scent & memory”, and how perfume is not only a commercialized product, but also a personal thing.
PROJ1 Collages and Sketches
Project 1, Part 1
My object is literally a baby, riding a dolphin, holding up a shell. I would guess that the original intended use of this is as a candy dish. I think my object represents literally a beachy scene in heaven. Its fantastical and not realistic while depicting real things. I think my object represents and has undertones and associations to Greek mythology and is similar to old marble statues. A baby could never ride a dolphin and it feels straight out of a story or tale. It reminds me of a young Poseidon. From the moment I saw this object I knew I wanted to make commentary on the ocean. This statue is so innocent and the dolphin is smiling and it makes you feel happy. But the icebergs are melting, the water levels are rising. I want to explore either adding trash to the shell the baby is holding or melting the object.
Project 1 Part 1 Danielle Porter: Research Writing
My objects are small glass bottles sealed with corks. The corks are removable, and the bottles are in different shapes, including a heart.
These objects indicate the individual who created them wishes to preserve even small items or substances in their life, and that others who buy these objects want the same.
Some of the things my bottles might represent are the ideas of women’s fashion products (creams or perfumes that come in odd bottles), potions, or ornate bottles of alcohol.
I think I want to associate the bottles with women’s beauty products in my sculpture. I want to create a large number of the bottles, almost to an overwhelming amount, and fit some of them inside a small container I have that looks like a dresser/cabinet. This I feel will deliver the connotation that women are pressured or feel that they must have many, many products in order to appear desirable, to the point where some women may have a frightening number of products they use.

For my first mold-making project, I have chosen to work with a mannequin head. A mannequin is an artificial figure, usually resembling a human, used by artists, tailors, or window-dressers to fit and display clothing. As I looked at the mannequin head, I thought about how it is carved with a so-called perfect face ratio. Still, after all, it is just a soulless doll that looks like any other figures used to display clothing and accessories. With that idea in mind, I suppose my chosen object symbolizes humans under standardization. Just like the production of mannequins in uniformity, humans are shaped by the invisible hand of prejudices and customs to fit into a perfect mold throughout the circle of life. Society surrounds us with the same standards and expectations for every gender and culture, compelling us to follow them until we soon lose our distinction. Gradually, each human being will become a standardized product mass-produced from conveyor belts, an accessory with nothing but the looks that please the crowd.
By duplicating the mannequin head from the mold, I want to demonstrate my vision of a human production conveyor belt that makes all humans look the same. I also intend to create multiple hands to add to the piece as a denotation of the human force that shapes our uniformity. I hope my sculpture work can communicate with the viewers about our standardized society and the importance of maintaining our identities.
Michael Duncan Project 1: “Accumulations”
I have chosen to work with a scaled-down version of a Volkswagen bus, which is made out of plastic and designed to be rolled backward to store energy that can be used to propel the van forward when released. This van denotes a carefree, “hippy” lifestyle, and the dream of living one’s life focusing on simple pleasures and not getting caught up in the traps of society. As far as connotations go, this van was gifted to me by my first real girlfriend who knew how much I loved these vehicles. As time went on, this van has represented a dream of mine to ‘dirtbag’ across the United States living out of a van, climbing every chance I get, seeing first hand countless natural beauties God has created, and escaping the stress of society and more specifically my seemingly inescapable future of working a boring desk job as an engineer until I am too old to do anything I wanted to when I was young. I want this project to be able to demonstrate the path my life has taken in the eyes of society since I received this van as a gift until now. I also want this project to be able to display how my perspective on the progression of the feasibility of this dream has changed from being worried about monetary issues to life commitment issues.
Project 1 Research: Writing Part 1
In a literal sense, I have chosen to work with a small wooden hand-carved hedgehog figurine that is holding a cob of corn. This object had many different textures from the quills on the back to the individual kernels of corn. I believe both the corn and hedgehog can have multiple meanings. Hedgehogs are known for their quills and ability to defend, as well as being intelligent beings. The corn can symbolize multiple things but is best represented by its value and versatility. Corn is the most widely produced crop in the United States, and 100% of every cob can be used from husks for tamales to the kernels and cob for feed. The hedgehog holding the corn and looking upwards make it seem as if there is a connotation of gifting the corn or contributing to something bigger. Especially because I will be working with multiples, this reminds me of teamwork and many people working together to accomplish much more. As mentioned, I think I could relate my object to defense with the hedgehogs’ quills, contributing to a larger goal with multiples, and finally, a random interpretation that I thought of is that corn is also called “maize”, which obviously sounds the same as a physical maze, so maybe there can be hedgehogs within a maze that relates to the corn itself in the name, but also shows the hedgehogs trying to find their way to a goal.

I have chosen to work with a seal as my object for project 1. The seal is a mammal with flippers that usually lives in the colder regions and spends most of its life in the water. The body of the seal is round with tapered ends allowing it to swim adequately under water. Seals are playful creatures who often symbolize imagination and creativity. They can inspire people to engage with their inner child, as they are often playing and interacting with others. Seals are often roaming the waters trying to find and discover new places. The seal is important to me because it reminds me of myself as a child/person. I can relate to the ways in which the seal lives, and I am interested to learn more about their lifestyle. For my project I might venture into the different ways in which seals play and interact with each other using the multiples to tell the story. I think it could be interesting to create many seals and have them interact with each other as humans would, personifying them in a sense.
